Man Walking With Wife Shot in Hayward

The shooting comes on the heels of that city experiencing five murders in less than a week.

HAYWARD, CA — A man was shot during a robbery while out for a walk in Hayward late Tuesday night, police said.

The married couple in their 40s were walking in the area of Florida Street and Dolphin Lane at about 11:45 p.m. when they were approached by a man with a gun, police said.

The robber pointed the gun at them and took both of their cellphones before shooting the man for an unknown reason. The suspect then ran to a large candy-apple red SUV and drove off, police said.

The male victim was taken to a hospital and required surgery, police Sgt. Ryan Cantrell said. The extent of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

His wife was not injured, police said.

Police described the suspect as a black man in his early 40s with a medium complexion. He is tall and thin and was wearing a multi-colored jacket during the robbery.
