Police Shoot, Kill Domestic Abuse Suspect After Chase

The man was shot by police while attempting a carjacking following a brief chase where a police officer was injured.

HAYWARD, CA — Police in Hayward have announced an officer-involved shooting death on Monday, Oct. 24, that they say related to a domestic violence and carjacking case.

At 9:56 a.m., officers were dispatched to a disturbance near the 21000 block of Gary Drive. Witnesses reported that a man went to his ex-girlfriend's house and brandished a firearm. Onlookers said the man had originally been inside her home, but residents were able to lock him out and call 911.

Witnesses reported that the suspect allegedly fired "numerous" rounds from a handgun and had left in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle as it fled eastbound on Grove Avenue and police say the driver allegedly refused to stop for the authorities.

A pursuit was initiated at that time, police said, and the suspect was chased through unincorporated Hayward and onto Interstate Highway 580, where he then exited onto northbound Eden Canyon Road. Police initiated a PIT maneuver to disable the suspect's vehicle and get him to stop; he came to a halt at an embankment just north of 580, police said.

Police allege that an officer became pinned by his leg between the suspect's car and a patrol vehicle. The suspect allegedly got out of his vehicle, armed, and ran northbound on Eden Canyon. Officers began a footchase of the suspect. Police claim that the suspect ran up to someone in a vehicle and either attempted to kidnap the person or carjack her vehicle.

"Due to the immediate danger and threat of harm to the driver, officers intervened and this is when the officer-involved shooting took place," said the Hayward Police Department in a statement.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. His identity is being withheld at this time.

The woman who the suspect allegedly approached was uninjured and the police officer who was pinned between two vehicles is expected to survive.

Police claim that they recovered a loaded firearm at the scene. They also claim that the suspect's vehicle had been involved in an earlier kidnapping and robbery in Emeryville.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is investigating the actions of both the police and the suspect, Hayward Police said. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has also been notified and is reviewing the case. An independent third-party investigative expert or experts will also review the case.

No identifying information about the officers involved is being released at this time and this is an ongoing investigation.
