Routine Traffic Stop On East Bay Highway Ends With Gun Arrests: CHP

HAYWARD, CA — A routine traffic stop for moving violations on an East Bay Highway near Hayward ended with police seizing multiple illegal guns and a DUI arrest, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said in a post on Friday that two officers saw a driver showing signs of impairment and pulled them over.

Officers told the driver to get out of the vehicle, but they refused, police said.

While trying to get the driver to comply, the officers noticed a gun on the driver's floorboard, police said.

All three people aboard the car were detained, and while searching them, police found a gun belonging to the passenger, police said.

The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of felony firearm violations and driving under the influence, according to the CHP.

The passenger, who was prohibited from carrying guns due to a previous conviction, was arrested on suspicion of additional felony firearm charges, police said.

"One traffic stop. Two illegal guns. One impaired driver," police said. "The sirens kept getting louder, and that’s why we’re out here."
