Organization information: SLZ JR REBELS Youth Football& Cheer Program founded in 2010: This program provides FREE to register, year round youth football and cheer to children in the Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland, Dublin, Pleasanton areas. 

The Purpose of this organization is to fight childhood obesity, leaving no child behind because the child’s; weight, size, capabilities, or financial situation.

Goals: We want to teach the children in the community, health, sportsmanship, and No is not the answer, to your future.

 “Bay Area Men’s Health Expo & Music in the Park”

Celebrating Men’s Health on Father’s Day weekend!

Scheduled for June 14, 2014

In support of National Men’s Health Month, The Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, Men’s Health Specialists, Hayward Area Recreation Department, The SLZ Jr. Rebels, Kaiser Permanente and Alameda County Public Health Department to celebrate healthy men in Alameda County.

The SLZ JR REBELS Youth Football, Cheer, & mentoring program, thrives on giving back to the community in every aspect.  We are not just your average youth program.  We are currently the only youth program in our area that is offering Free registration.  Our program does not discriminate against children because, of a child's weight, size capabilities, or financial situation.  We want to make sure that young men learn from an early age the importance of men's health, and starting early, rather than later.

Chamber Executive Director Bill Mulgrew explains:  “There is a real need in the East Bay to put the spotlight on men’s health issues and practices to bring them out of the shadows. We men tend to walk through pain and other warning signals, while avoiding the early detection tests/screens that could be life savers or life enhancers.  We wanted to address all the components that comprise a man’s: physical, emotional, environmental, financial, and spiritual Health.   We wanted to do it in a way that makes it a great experience for men and the people who love them.”

Numbiya Aziz, Men’s Health Specialists adds “In addition to free, on-the-spot health screenings, there will be demonstrations of massage, yoga, jazzercise, ballroom dance and healthy cooking. We’ll have exhibits focusing on men’s health mentioned earlier, and we’ll have presentations by leading health experts on the inside stage. The health information available at the Expo will be fresh, interesting and comprehensive.”

The Festival aspect of the Event is being created and managed by San Lorenzo Jr. Rebels, Youth Football, Cheering, & Mentoring Program's Co-Founder Zelma Byrd & Staff, who outlines the fun: “There will be a great balance of activity with entertainment for all ages including an adult’s 3-on- 3 Mini basketball tournament, and a youth 7-on-7 flag football mini tournament, in conjunction with other Bay Area Youth football organizations”. Byrd continues, “On our outdoor stage, we’ll have entertainment all day long: Led by The VFW Flag Ceremony a great line-up of music, provided by Head liner-Suga -T, Jim Bedford Presents, Taylor Made, Castro Valley School of Music, Shmave Doe, ABC Music Company, San Quinn, a host of comedians, led by L Boogie The Comic, and our DJ B Squeezy will introduce the diverse live musical acts. “This lawn area, concludes Byrd, is perfect for this events Men’s Health Expo, and the families that love them, enjoying Father’s Day weekend. While enjoying the entertainment, grab something to eat, with the Food Truck Mafia.

Chamber Executive Director Mulgrew concludes, “Supervisor Miley and Alameda County Public Health both pride themselves on bringing healthy alternatives to the communities, and this event will be an awesome demonstration of that. Of course, Castro Valley & the Eden Areas will add its own unique flavoring to make it a real Health Party for everyone.
