VIDEO: Local Heroes Honor 9/11 Heroes at School Assembly
Firefighters, police and even military personnel honored their heroes of 9/11 during an assembly at Lorenzo Manor Elementary School Friday morning.
San Lorenzo firefighters, police, and military personnel may be heroes in the eyes of their community, but on Friday morning, they paid tribute to their fallen heroes of Sept. 11.
Lorenzo Manor Elementary School held a school assembly in their courtyard, honoring all the first responders that lost their lives during Sept. 11.
Nearly a dozen service members attended — greeting students and parents, giving emergency safety tips and answering questions about their profession and what happened during Sept. 11.

The event, organized by , began with a speech by Principal Greg Sahakian on what happened during September 11, 2001, and what that day has come to mean to many Americans: a day of service.
, then gave a presentation of the traditional fireman's "Ringing of the Bell" ceremony. Capt. Ismail also played "Amazing Grace" on his bagpipes for the kids.

After playing for the past 20 years, he has his wife to thank for getting him started.
"She bought me a bunch of this stuff and next thing I knew, I was starting to play...or at least trying to figure out how," he said.
Capt. Ismail has been invited by numerous organizations and groups to perform at various events — one of the most prestigious being the International Association of Fire Fighters at Colorado Springs, CO.
Deputy J.D. Stewart from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department gave students tips on staying safe on and off school campus.
Kathy Vargas and Stanley B. Kamiya from the U.S. Army introduced themselves to the kids. Kamiya recently retired after serving in the military for 33 years. Vargas will be deployed to Afghanistan in the next two weeks.
