Wieckowski Recognizes Hayward 'CoolCalifornia' Small Business Award Winner

Way To Be Designs honored as a climate leader for taking steps to reduce impact on our climate.

State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) recognized Hayward’s Way To Be Designs today for its selection as a CoolCalifornia Small Business Award winner by the California Air Resources Board. Way To Be Designs and 15 other companies were honored during a ceremony at the California Environmental Protection Agency building.

“I applaud Way To Be Designs for actively taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint,” Wieckowski said. “To be one of only 16 companies recognized across the state, shows they are dedicated to being a responsible, environmentally-friendly enterprise.”

Way To Be Designs offers creative custom and branded merchandise and uniforms for mid to large size companies.

The CoolCalifornia Small Business Awards are in their fifth year. The selected companies are recognized for demonstrating leadership and making notable, voluntary reductions in climate pollution.

Way To Be Designs uses ENERGY STAR-rated equipment, composts food scraps, installed motion light sensors in break rooms, upgraded its heating system, set-up programmable thermostats and produces sustainable products.

Among the steps taken by the other 15 companies were using recycled/repurposed products; composting food scraps and plant material; installing LED lighting, solar panels and energy-efficient equipment; eliminating solvents and chemicals; putting aerators on faucets and installing low-flow toilets.

The small businesses submitted applications which were scored by two-person teams comprised of representatives from private businesses and public agencies. Site visits and environmental reviews were conducted by ARB staff.

The 16 CoolCalifornia winners make up a variety of business types from veterinary services and dental health to bowling, floral design and manufacturing.

Wieckowski’s 10th Senate district includes southern Alameda County and northeast Santa Clara County.
