Another Day, Another Water Main Break on Sunset Boulevard

The break was reported some time after noon in the 10200 block of West Sunset Boulevard, near Charing Cross Road.

A stretch of Sunset Boulevard in Holmby Hills was closed today after a 12-inch cast-iron water main ruptured, cutting service to about 12 residents, a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman said.

The break was reported some time after noon in the 10200 block of West Sunset Boulevard, near Charing Cross Road, said the DWP’s Kim Hughes.

The water was shut off and crews began excavating the street to expose the broken pipe, which was installed in 1969, according to the DWP. The estimated time for completion of the repair was 3 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

Sunset was closed in both directions between Charing Cross Road and Mapleton Drive, Hughes said.

The break happened less than a day after a stretch of Sunset Boulevard reopened in West Hollywood following a water main break on the busy thoroughfare near Olive Drive on Friday.

Today’s break was on a different line than the 36-inch steel riveted trunk line that ruptured Friday, but the cause will nonetheless be investigated, Hughes said.

In Pacoima, meanwhile, about eight customers were without water after a 6-inch pipe broke early this morning in the area near Montague and Pine Orchard streets, Hughes said.

No cause was disclosed for either break and it was unclear how long the affected DWP customers in Pacoima were expected to remain without service.
