Burst Water Main Creates Havoc In West LA Neighborhood

A four-inch valve leak near Century City caused a dramatic spray of water to flood Patricia Avenue in West Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Authorities were working to shut off a high-pressure water leak in West Los Angeles that damaged pavement and caused flooding in one home overnight.

The leak, which was at risk of flooding nearby homes, was reported just before 10 p.m. Monday at 2125 Patricia Ave. near Olympic Boulevard, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, he said.

"Though the bulk of water flow was briefly stemmed when LAFD closed one large subterranean valve, residual pressure in the neighborhood's complex water supply network has led to a continued water flow that may lead to flood danger at some nearby homes beyond the one already flooded," Humphrey said.

Crews were working to close subterranean system valves in the neighborhood while, he said.

"We shut off as many valves as we can, and now it's up to the Department of Water & Power, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Patricia Avenue was closed to all traffic between Holmby and Louisiana avenues while the repairs were being made.

By 1 a.m., the damage was contained and water was restored to the 60 customers affected, said a LA DWP spokesman. Crews are working to repair damage to the street.
