UPDATED: 3 Lanes on 405 Close; Pedestrian Killed Near Getty Center Drive

A pedestrian was killed today on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway at Getty Center Drive, prompting the closure of three northbound lanes while authorities investigated the death, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers were sent to the area at 5:38 a.m. after the man was found dead at the location, the CHP reported. Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of his relatives.

It was unclear why the man was walking on the freeway, according to the CHP.

Traffic was jammed through the Sepulveda Pass until after noon, with vehicles backed up well south of the junction with the Santa Monica (10) Freeway and some surfaces streets gridlock near major off-ramps.

The investigation wrapped up shortly before noon, when the closed lanes were reopened, according to he CHP.
