Fifth Anniversary Memorial Event for 2011 Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Takes Place March 6, 2016 in Downtown L.A.

The fifth anniversary memorial event for the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami will remember lives lost and honor survivors. It takes place March 6, 2016 in Downtown Los Angeles at LAPD Headquarters.

“Love to Nippon 2016” (“Love to Japan”) supports the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the devastated regions, and helps prepare and train Southern Californians for future natural disasters through sharing information and education, and designating “3.11” (March 11th) as the official statewide natural disaster preparedness training day.

This fifth annual event will be a peaceful commemoration with interfaith prayers, musical tributes, incense-burning, presentations, and outdoor information booths hosted by the American Red Cross, Home Depot, LA County Fire Dept, US Coast Guard, and three affected prefectures of Japan. Over 1600 participants gathered for last four year’s memorial event.

The formal indoor program includes: prayers by Shinto sector and the leaders of the Nikkei Interfaith Group including Los Angeles Buddhist Temple Federation, Centenary United Methodist Church, Union Church of Los Angeles and N’vay Shalom Synagogue; musical tributes from Nishiyamato Elementary/Junior High School, and Holiness Youth Choir; keynote speech by Honorable Norman Y. Mineta, former Secretary of Transportation; panel discussion with Honorable Norman Mineta, LACFD Chief Daryl L. Osby, LACFD Battalion Chief Larry Collins, Masako Unoura-Tanaka, Founder of Love to Nippon Project, Ofunato Fire Department of Iwate, Japan; closing remarks by Consul General of Japan and Honorary Committee Chair of Love to Nippon 2016, Hidehisa Horinouchi.
