Get Ready for Autumn and Winter by Dressing Wisely For Your Commute With the heat dissipating and the cooler months approaching, it is time to begin thinking about how to alter your commute for the autumn / winter season. If you are continuing to cycle to and from work and/or take the Metro, it is important to dress appropriately.
Below you will find attire solutions that will allow you to stay comfortable no matter what nature throws at you. For cyclists and metro riders:
• Dress in layers. Remember these three terms: Base Layer, Insulation Layer and Outer Layer.
• Merino wool is an excellent base layer that helps to regulate body temperature, keeps you warm and wicks away moisture from the skin. It also helps to repel odor that develops from sweat so you can feel fresh at work. • Insulate body heat by wearing a mid layer made of cotton or merino wool. This will keep your internal body heat where it belongs: inside your body.
• Wind can be a problem when riding a bike or waiting for a bus. To protect against the wind, check out lightweight nylon outer layers. This synthetic material serves as a shield to stop wind from robbing you of your internal body heat. Coupled with insulation layers, “windbreakers” reduce heat loss. Lightweight and compact, nylon outer layers are easily compressed and stored in the pouch of a purse or backpack.
• Rain is everyone’s mortal enemy. Nothing quite ruins a day like being soaked. Be sure to pack and umbrella or have a waterproof outer coat that has an impermeable layer. If it says Gore-Tex on it you are a good to go.
Companies like Icebreaker and Patagonia make the best attire to protect against the elements. Both of these companies employ environmentally friendly business practices and their garments have been proven in the most adverse conditions, they will certainly protect you during your morning and evening commute.
