Saint Sebastian School Expands Dual Language Immersion Program

Students are learning both Spanish and English. The school is only the second Catholic Dual Language Immersion School in California

Los Angeles, CA: Today Saint Sebastian School, a private Catholic preschool, elementary and middle school in West Los Angeles, has expanded its Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion Program. Students in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade are part of this innovative program. In 2017-2018 it will include Second Grade as well. The program features half the day learning in Spanish and half the day in English. Students learn each language while learning other academic subjects such as math, science, history and religion. Language is also integrated into music, art and physical education. Saint Sebastian School also blends in technology with iPads and a new computer lab.

The Dual Language Program is one of three Immersion Catholic schools along with All Souls World Language School in Alhambra and Saint Matthias School in Huntington Park. Catholic Dual Language programs were highlighted in the Fall issue of Momentum magazine.

As Dual Language Immersion programs have risen in popularity, the results demonstrate a continued pattern of success:

  • Students gain grade level academic ability, well-developed language and literacy skills in two languages.
  • Dual Language learning programs have proven to close the achievement gap between English learners and native English speakers.
  • Students develop greater cross-cultural competency and understanding.
  • Learning two languages improves cognitive functions and higher level learning.
