UCLA Admits 16K Students for Fall

More than 16,000 prospective freshmen have been admitted to UCLA for the fall, representing about 20 percent of the nearly 80,500 who applied, the university announced Thursday.

The prospective class of 16,177 students includes 9,539 California residents, about 84 percent of whom are expected to graduate in the top 9 percent of their high school class, according to UCLA. The prospective students represent nearly every state and 74 countries.

"The ever-increasing demand for a UCLA education and the competitiveness of our admissions process are testaments to our value as one of the world's most prestigious universities and the destination point for exceptionally talented and motivated students," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said. "Our admitted class represents the wide range of backgrounds that a public institution like UCLA should reflect."

Admitted freshman have until May 1 to state whether they intend to actually enroll at the university. Transfer students have until June 1.

UCLA has set its enrollment target for in-state students at 4,100 students, up 100 from last year. The target for non-residents remains at about 1,600, according to the university.

The admitted in-state students are 43 percent Asian, 26.3 percent white, 21.3 percent Latino and 4.2 percent black.

Across the entire UC system, 82,850 students were admitted, up 3.2 percent from last year. All nine campuses increased admission offers to out-of-state students, increasing the overall number from 18,846 last year to 22,761 this year, according to the university.
