UCLA Burned in Science Experiment Explosion

The student, who suffered chest injuries and burns to his face, is reportedly in fair condition.

A UCLA student suffered chest injuries and burns to his face and neck when an oven he was using to conduct a science experiment exploded in the campus engineering building, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

It happened about 6 p.m. in a laboratory on the second floor of the school's six-story engineering building, LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The student was in fair condition, Humphrey said.

The lab was isolated as an investigation into the incident continued this evening, but there was no fire, no formal evacuation and no lingering hazard, he said.
