Willy Lam, one of Hong Kong’s top writers about mainland China, will speak at a Global Café breakfast meeting of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council on Tuesday, May 19th. Lam has studied and written about Chinese politics for 35 years, and he will discuss the background and performance of current Chinese President Xi Jinping as he tries to project a stronger image of China around the world. Lam will talk about Xi’s foreign policy, the role of the People’s Liberation Army, and the growing friction between China and its neighbors in Asia. He will also talk about Xi’s wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign, his resistance to political reform, and the fears that are spreading about the gradual slowing of the Chinese economy.

Dr Lam is an Adjunct Professor in the History Department, the Centre for China Studies, and the Master’s Program in Global Political Economy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was CNN’s Senior China Analyst from 2000 to 2014. From the mid-1980s to 2000, he was China editor of the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong’s English-language paper. He has published seven books on China, most recently Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping: Renaissance, Reform, or Retrogression?
