CERRITOS, CA — Despite rain in the forecast, Cerritos officials are reminding residents that drought-tolerant landscaping can help yards withstand extensive dry periods.
The city offers resources to help residents update their front yards while fulfilling municipal landscaping requirements, including the "Front Yard Landscape Design Manual" and "Drought-Tolerant Plant Reference Guide" are available here.
Residents must obtain no-fee planning approval before altering front-yard landscaping, according to the city. Local regulations require drought-tolerant plant material to cover at least 80% of the landscaped area. Materials that are not organic, including decomposed aggregate, gravel and rock, may cover up to 20%.
Artificial turf is allowed on no more than 75% of a front-yard but is prohibited in parkways.
