Bone Marrow Donor Found For Cerritos Sheriff's Sergeant

The sheriff's department announced January Sgt. Jorge Chavez was diagnosed with leukemia and needed a life-saving bone marrow transplant.

CERRITOS, CA -- A sergeant at the Cerritos Sheriff's Station will receive a bone marrow transplant within the next couple of weeks after a matching donor was found, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says.

Last January, the sheriff's department announced that Sgt. Jorge Chavez was diagnosed with leukemia and needed a life-saving bone marrow transplant. A fundraiser and bone marrow drive were held Jan. 12 at the Cerritos station, according to a Facebook post.

An announcement was posted on Facebook on Sunday about the donor match. It did not say whether that donor was found at the drive in January.
