In 2005, Scott Gardner of Lakewood was riding his bike to work on the San Gabriel River bed when a pedestrian pushed him over. He broke his left side, including a major break at the top of his femur. He was in the hospital for 23 days, in a wheel chair for 4 months, and on crutches for six months. His left leg was two inches shorter than his right leg. It wasn’t until 4 years after the accident he was able to ride again, and then eventually he started to run.
Over the last eight years, he has been in the operating room several times, and his left leg was completely rebuilt, yet he still felt off. Even though now Scott cannot run and walks with a cane, he still participates in these races, because he loves to race.
You’ll catch Scott this Sunday May 4, 2014 at the US Bank 10th Annual OC Marathon, along with 22,000 other runners participating in the marathon, half marathon, Wahoo’s OC 5K, and Kids Run the OC. Starting at the Newport Beach Marriott and ending at the OC Fair and Event Center, the race traverses Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Santa Ana.
