Man, 74, Killed After Being Struck by Driver Who Took Off

Police have since arrested the suspected driver, who was booked on manslaughter charges.

DOWNEY, CA - A man was struck and killed Wednesday night on a street in Downey and the driver who hit him was being booked on a manslaughter charge, a police lieutenant said.

The collision occurred about 8:10 p.m. at the intersection of Gallatin Road and Stokes Avenue, according to Downey police Lt. Scott Laughner.

The victim died at the scene, Laugher said. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Laughner said he didn't know how old the victim was, but NBC4 reported he was 74.

The driver left the scene after the crash, Laughner said.

"We have since located him and taken him into custody," Laughner said. "He will be booked on a manslaughter charge."

Laughner said he didn't know if the victim was in a crosswalk when he was hit.

The driver was still in the process of being booked, Laughner said late tonight, making his name unavailable.
