Man Thought to Have Grenade Prompted Evacuation of Bus Station [UPDATED]

NORWALK, CA - A man who was mistakenly thought to be carrying a grenade was briefly detained tonight by deputies until a bus in Norwalk was searched and cleared, a lieutenant said.

The driver called dispatch when the man got on the Norwalk Transit System bus at about 7:30 p.m., said Sgt. L. Auner of the sheriff's Norwalk Station.

Dispatch called the sheriff's station and deputies responded to the 12600 block of Imperial Highway, Auner said. Only one other person was on the bus, according to the sheriff's department.

The man was ordered by deputies to take his clothes off to make sure he wasn't armed and he was detained at about 8:30 p.m.

"The bus was searched and bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in but no explosive was found," sheriff's Lt. Jeff Dusky said. "The man was briefly detained while the search was conducted and then he was released."

Dusky said it appeared the bus driver mistakenly identified something the man was carrying in his hand as a grenade.
