Parking Citation Fees Double for Most Violations

The increase took effect July 1 and will allow cities to recover most of its cost.

Parking tickets have gotten a whole lot more expensive, as of July 1.

Fines for designated parking prohibitions and restrictions have increased to $26. Previously, 19 of the parking citations cost $13, and two citations had fines of $16 and $18 – Parking in Two Spaces and Not Parking in Marked Spaces, respectively.

The increase is expected to allow cities to recover most of the cost associated with issuing each citation.

The State of California levies a total of $12.50 in fees and assessments for each citation. The State's assessments include: courthouse construction ($2.50); criminal justice facility ($2.50); ICNF court construction ($3); court construction ($1.50); and the Trial Court Trust Fund ($3). Cities also pay a citation processing fee of $1.48. Meanwhile, the city’s labor cost for processing each citation is approximately $13.60.
