Suspect Arrested in Shooting That Injured 2 LASD Deputies

The shooting occurred Thursday night in Bellflower. Both deputies are expected to survive.

BELLFLOWER, CA — One person is in custody after two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies were injured in a shooting in Bellflower Thursday night, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around in the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue just before 11 p.m. The deputies injured in the shooting were assigned to the Lakewood Station.

According to the LASD, deputies were conducting a DUI checkpoint on Lakewood Boulevard when they attempted to conduct a "vehicle code enforcement stop," authorities said. The vehicle was followed by a motorcycle deputy, at which time the car came to a stop on the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue.

The driver stepped out of the vehicle with a firearm and fired several rounds at the deputy striking him multiple times, authorities said. The deputy returned fire and the suspect fled on foot.

According to authorities, the suspect continued his assault, by firing several rounds at the responding deputies, striking one of them with gunfire.

The suspect once again fled on foot and fired at a third group of deputies. The deputies returned fire, but the suspect fled the area in an unknown direction. Authorities said they did not know if the suspect was struck by the deputy gunfire.

Authorities searched the area for the suspected gunman.

The two deputies struck by gunfire were taken to the hospital for surgery and are said to be in fair condition and are expected to survive.
