1. South Chico travel center gets green light after school concerns (actionnewsnow.com) — Chico's Planning Commission has unanimously approved the Skyway Travel Center in south Chico, clearing the way for a new gas station, store, and carwash at Skyway and Carmichael. After school officials raised traffic and safety concerns, the developer revised the design, moved key features farther from the Butte County Office of Education, and now awaits final design review.
2. Goats returning to Chico's Lindo Channel for vegetation management (actionnewsnow.com) — Hundreds of goats are headed back to Chico's Lindo Channel as the city launches another round of grazing to cut vegetation and wildfire fuel along a 33-acre stretch. Trails will stay open where possible, but residents are urged to avoid fenced areas, keep kids and pets away from electric fencing, and not disturb the goats or guard dogs.
3. Chico plans camping enforcement at three locations (actionnewsnow.com) — City officials are preparing to close three Chico public areas to camping on August 31, enforcing anti-camping rules while offering limited space at Genesis pallet shelters and Torres Community Shelter. Outreach with Legal Services of Northern California will verify camp locations, and enforcement will pause for people who can't access a bed once shelters are full.
4. Fuel reduction projects underway in Butte County foothills (orovillemr.com) — Cal Fire-Butte County crews, working out of the Chico area, are clearing thousands of acres of brush near Paradise, Magalia, and Cohasset to reduce wildfire risk in the foothills. Using chainsaws, masticators, burns, and even goats, they're building fire breaks on public and private land, with more prescribed burns planned this fall that will benefit nearby Chico residents.

Yuba City Republican introduces bill to curb political gerrymandering in response to Prop. 50 (santacruzsentinel.com) — A new federal redistricting bill was unveiled at DeGarmo Park in Chico, where Rep. James Gallagher and Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder argued Proposition 50 unfairly split North State communities. The Representation Act would require states to define and protect "communities of interest," letting residents challenge maps in court and aiming to keep rural areas like Chico, Paradise, and Magalia politically intact.
