Chico State students return for fall semester, boosting downtown Chico businesses (krcrtv.com) — Chico State students are back for the fall semester, and their return is already boosting foot traffic and sales for downtown Chico shops. With enrollment projected above 15,000 and growing, local businesses like Anika Burke are expanding hours and tailoring merchandise to students, families, and visitors who help drive the city's year-round economy.
2. Two men, woman arrested after fentanyl, meth, heroin found during traffic stop (actionnewsnow.com) — Butte County deputies arrested three Chico residents after a nighttime traffic stop near Greenwich Drive and West 11th Avenue led to a parole search and discovery of multiple narcotics. The driver, on CDC parole, and two passengers were all booked into Butte County Jail on suspicion of drug and warrant-related offenses, underscoring ongoing local enforcement around fentanyl and other drugs.
3. Wildfire Grants Support Butte, Colusa Projects (colusacountynews.com) — Based in Chico, the North Valley Community Foundation is steering more than $131,000 to wildfire prevention and preparedness projects across Butte and neighboring counties, including defensible space work for vulnerable homeowners and new equipment for local fire groups. Several Butte County programs, from prescribed burn associations to Stirling City's volunteer fire department, will see direct support.
4. Salvation Army's Oroville store closing but Chico rehab program unaffected (actionnewsnow.com) — A Chico-based Salvation Army rehab graduate says the Adult Rehabilitation Program helped him move from homelessness and addiction to steady work and sobriety, even as the Oroville thrift store that helps fund the program prepares to close. Leaders say the shutdown, set for August 31, won't cut support for participants, and donation pickups in Oroville will continue.
