1. Eating right while on a budget (theorion.com) — If you're in Chico and watching your budget, Chico State's Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry offers free groceries and hygiene items to students and staff right on campus. Chico residents can also tap local options like the Salvation Army, North State Food Bank distributions, and numerous student discounts at Chico restaurants and grocery chains when they show a Wildcat ID.
2. Chico surgery center asking community for help to stay open (actionnewsnow.com) — Skyway Surgery Center on Raley Boulevard in Chico is warning it may have to close if patient numbers don't rebound, and is asking residents to request procedures there when possible. Doctors say the ambulatory surgery center offers lower costs and fewer infections than hospitals, and fear its loss would strain already stressed local hospital services.
3. DUI checkpoint planned Friday night in Chico (krcrtv.com) — If you'll be driving in Chico Friday night, expect a DUI and license checkpoint on northbound East Avenue, just south of Commercial Street, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. CHP and Chico police will screen drivers for alcohol or drug impairment using trained officers and breath tests, with arrests possible for those found under the influence.
4. Chico State men's soccer drops home opener (theorion.com) — Chico State men's soccer dropped its home opener 2-1, extending a tough 0-3 start but giving local fans another chance to rally at University Soccer Stadium this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Students can attend for free with a Wildcat ID or Canvas homepage, and the team hopes stronger focus and cohesion will turn the season around.
5. Cal Skate Chico yard sale draws hundreds as longtime owners prepare to retire (krcrtv.com) — Cal Skate, a beloved Chico roller rink since 1978, is changing hands as longtime owners retire and sell off nostalgic items to eager locals. Hundreds turned out for a yard sale and online auction, while the new owners plan to keep skating, mini-golf, and batting cages, giving the community continuity along with a refreshed space.
