• New recruits begin firefighting academy for Chico Fire Department (actionnewsnow.com) — Six new recruits have just started an intensive eight-week academy with the Chico Fire Department and will soon be serving residents across the city. The training is designed to be mentally and physically demanding, building the skills and teamwork needed for frontline firefighting. Once they graduate, these new firefighters will immediately join crews responding to local emergencies.
• Dangerous E. coli strain not found in Big Chico Creek tests this summer (krcrtv.com) — Chico swimmers are getting cautiously good news: the dangerous E. coli O157 strain hasn't appeared in Big Chico Creek tests this summer, though Sycamore Pool still shows elevated bacteria levels. Butte County's health officer will brief the Chico City Council tonight on what the results mean for water quality, safety, and possible testing of other local swimming spots.
• North State Food Bank distributes 1 million pounds of food in 2026 (krcrtv.com) — North State Food Bank has already distributed over 1 million pounds of food this year, including through its Chico pantry and local drive-through events. The program, run by the Community Action Agency of Butte County, relies on donations, volunteers and partner groups to reach families, seniors and children. Residents can support the effort or seek help through the agency's website.
