1. Duke's Pet Park and Kennel opens at Torres Community Shelter in Chico (krcrtv.com) — A new pet park and kennel at the Torres Community Shelter in Chico now lets unhoused residents safely board their animals while they work, attend appointments, or pursue housing. True North Housing Alliance is still seeking donations and funding to finish the outdoor pet area and provide food, leashes, bedding, and other supplies for the animals staying there.
   

2. Chico PD lost access to ALPR data (chicosol.org) — Chico police temporarily lost access to millions of automated license plate records after turning off data sharing with federal and out-of-state agencies, and are still working to restore everything. City Council members say some data has been recovered, but the scope of the loss remains unclear. The department will present its findings at a special City Council session on Sept. 21, which residents can follow for answers on privacy, policing, and accountability.
   

3. Chico State police chief finalists: Gary Mejia (theorion.com) — Chico State is considering longtime law enforcement leader Gary Mejia as one of four finalists for its next chief of police, following the June departure of the previous chief. Mejia emphasized community-based policing, closer engagement with students and faculty, and creating pathways for student employees interested in law enforcement careers during a public forum on campus.
   

4. 18th annual rock and gem show returns to Chico fairgrounds (actionnewsnow.com) — Rock, gem, and mineral fans can head to the Chico Silver Dollar Fairgrounds this weekend for a two-day show featuring more than 40 vendors and free necklaces for the first 200 kids each day. Admission is $6 for adults, kids under 16 are free, and locals can grab a $1-off coupon online before going Saturday or Sunday.
   

5. Steve Hilton Campaigns in Chico (actionnewsnow.com) — A Republican gubernatorial candidate stopped in Chico for the grand opening of the Butte County Republican Party headquarters, outlining plans like making some income tax-free and canceling high-speed rail. He focused mostly on statewide themes, from energy policy to regulations, and declined to answer Chico-specific questions on wildfire prevention and insurance. Local voters heard a strong call to support his campaign against the Democratic frontrunner.
