Butte County nonprofit hosts free events for DV awareness month (actionnewsnow.com) — Chico residents can join Catalyst's free Safe HAVEN Showcase at The Commons on Oct. 7, featuring music, raffles, and local business prizes to promote healthy relationships. Throughout October, the nonprofit is also running a Coffee with a Cause sleeve campaign, plus a Flowers on the Creek memorial and a free training at Chico State on intimate partner violence.
2. Chico teen arrested after shots fired at occupied vehicle, police say (krcrtv.com) — Chico police arrested a 16-year-old boy Monday morning after he allegedly assaulted a girl and fired at an occupied vehicle in a neighborhood near Ceres Avenue and Gardens Park Drive, briefly prompting shelter‑in‑place orders. Officers later found two firearms in his backpack, and multiple felony charges are being forwarded to Butte County authorities, though police say there's no ongoing threat to the public.
3. Sweet Chico Confections candy store to close in downtown Chico (actionnewsnow.com) — Downtown Chico is losing Sweet Chico Confections, which plans to close on Oct. 30 with a liquidation sale already underway. The longtime candy shop cites concerns about downtown leadership, code enforcement, and vacancies, even as some new restaurants and cafes open nearby and another business is reportedly eyeing the space.
4. Blood drives coming to Chico, Oroville and Yuba City this October (actionnewsnow.com) — Blood donors in Chico can give at California State University, Chico on Oct. 13 and 14, with drives running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vitalant is holding blood drives across Northern California all month, with donors entered to win gift cards and encouraged by a local nurse and breast cancer survivor's story.
5. Ye old battle in the square (theorion.com) — Chico bands Repair Unknown and Hole Puncher will face off against groups from Sacramento and Davis in KCSC's Renaissance‑themed Battle of the Bands this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Law. The public is invited to dress up, enjoy live music, and see which act judges crown the winner after a social‑media‑driven selection process.
