1. Chico State sustainability conference returns with focus on groundwater, community (krcrtv.com) — Chico State has revived its long-running "This Way to Sustainability" conference as a one-day showcase focused on local groundwater challenges and community projects. Students, faculty, and residents explored how dropping groundwater levels affect wells, trees, and neighborhoods, while learning practical, less-intimidating ways to support social, environmental, and economic sustainability in and around Chico.
2. Chico rejects tougher rules targeting homeless encampments, for now (mynspr.org) — Chico's City Council has, for now, rejected tougher rules that would have allowed misdemeanor charges for illegal camping even when no shelter beds are available. The 5–2 vote keeps current homelessness enforcement limits in place as the Warren v. Chico settlement nears its 2027 expiration, with councilmembers set to revisit the proposals on October 20.
3. Road closures in Chico after crash knocks down power lines (krcrtv.com) — A crash in Chico has knocked down power lines, closing Cohasset Road at Burnap Avenue and Easton Road at Cohasset and causing major traffic delays. PG&E reports about 2,325 customers without power, including near Chico Municipal Airport and Cohasset, with crews still assessing damage and no restoration time yet announced, so drivers and residents should plan for disruptions.
4. Chico State students rally against sexual assault amid Cornell controversy. See photos from the protest (mynspr.org) — Chico State students gathered on campus Wednesday to protest sexual assault on college campuses, joining a nationwide response to a high‑profile Cornell case. More than 100 people, including survivors and faculty, rallied in Chico to show solidarity, call for stronger protections, and remind local students they're not alone in confronting sexual violence.
