Police Investigating Drive-By Shooting in Citrus Heights

Shooting took place near Carriage Drive Elementary School and Mesa Verde High School.

An Antelope man was shot Friday morning while driving in Citrus Heights, according to the Citrus Heights Police Department.

Kanai Drive was closed between Auburn Blvd and Carriage Drive Friday afternoon while police investigated the shooting, which took place just before 11:00 a.m. near Carriage Drive Elementary School and Mesa Verde High School.

The victim, who was in his early 20s, called 911 to report that someone had shot at him from a red compact car, according to CHPD spokesperson Officer Bryan Friesch. Friesch said the man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

At about 1:00 p.m. Friday, officers were gathering evidence from a blue Nissan 200SX parked at the corner of Auburn and Kanai while curious neighbors looked on.

"There's a lot of crazy going on around here lately," said Kim Hulse, 43, who lives a few blocks away from where the shooting took place.

Hulse said she had two children, 17 and 20, who "know everybody" and was hoping the victim was not one of her children's friends.

Police said they do not yet have a motive for the shooting.

Officers are searching for the red compact car, last seen speeding away from the  Pratt Avenue area. They're asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Citrus Heights Police Department at 916-727-5500.
