SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 3, 2013) – As high visibility events like the 2012 Olympics, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and this year’s America’s Cup move toward zero waste goals, this green trend is spreading to local business events.
On May 16, Building Owners and Managers Association – Sacramento & the Central Valley (BOMA) partnered with Waste Management of Northern California (Waste Management) to create the business association’s first step toward “zero waste” golf tournament sponsored by Able Services. The tournament was held at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Roseville, Calif.
“BOMA members have been leaders in waste reduction efforts in the area for years and embrace the vision of assuring a sustainable environment,” said Dave Mastro, BOMA Sacramento president.
Waste Management worked with all of the hole sponsors to ensure they had receptacles for recycling and staffed the event with “recycling ambassadors” around the course to help communicate the new program as well as provide “in cart” recycling.
At the end of the tournament, the total amount of waste and recyclable materials collected weighed in at 504.5 lbs. Of which, 232 lbs. were recyclable materials, establishing a diversion rate of 46 percent.
“The results create a baseline to understand how much waste is generated at their annual golf event and to track how much of that waste is being recycled,” said Justin Wilcock, Waste Management, Sustainability program manager. “This will help future tournaments to continuously increase the amount of material diverted from the landfill with an eventual goal of zero waste.”
“By collaborating with Waste Management for this tournament, we strive to be an example for others on the importance of waste reduction and encourage businesses to implement sustainable corporate practices and inspire social and environmental responsibility,” said Mastro.
