Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services Kicked Off Holiday Turkey Drive with Donation of 750 Thanksgiving Turkeys

Donation from Foster Farms helps meet increased demand for Thanksgiving meals

In advance of Thanksgiving, Foster Farms donated 750 turkeys (approximately 13,500 pounds) to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) on November 13. The turkeys will be distributed in the coming weeks to help feed local families this Thanksgiving.

This continues Foster Farms’ tradition of Thanksgiving turkey donations to West Coast food banks to address the growing issue of food insecurity.

“You can’t put a value on an old-fashioned turkey dinner with family over the holidays,” said Ira Brill, director of communication for Foster Farms. “Unfortunately, too many can’t afford that simple pleasure. We are honored to play a part in helping less fortunate families enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal this year.”

SFBFS is one of six West Coast food banks receiving Foster Farms turkey donations this Thanksgiving to distribute to local communities in California, Oregon and Washington. Foster Farms is donating more than 4,500 turkeys – or 81,000 pounds of turkey – to help feed families this Thanksgiving. Through its Pass the Plate program, in partnership with local food banks, the company also provided hundreds of families with complete chicken dinners each week throughout the summer.

SFBFS’ President and CEO Blake Young was on-site to receive the donation and speak about the area’s level of Food insecurity and call for additional turkey donations leading up to Thanksgiving.

California Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Jim Houston was also on hand to help raise awareness of the need for food donations and to thank Foster Farms for its role in helping feed the area’s hungry.

Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather and enjoy a meal together, yet 244,000 individuals in Sacramento County are food insecure. SFBFS encourages the community to join Foster Farms in providing turkeys and other key ingredients of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to help families in need enjoy the holiday.
