The Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus opens for CMC community (cmc.edu) ā Claremont residents now have a major new neighbor across Claremont Boulevard, as Claremont McKenna College's Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus opens with state-of-the-art fields and a new under-the-boulevard pedestrian arcade. The project doubles CMC's footprint, adds parking, lighting, and safety improvements at Ninth and Claremont, and will host CMS football's Sept. 5 home opener plus expanded recreational access for the campus community.

3. Bear family rescued after being trapped in a La Verne water tank (dailynews.com) ā A bear family was safely rescued Saturday from a La Verne Fire Department water tank just off the popular 5-Mile Loop Trail by Claremont Wilderness Park, a spot many local hikers know well. Los Angeles County and La Verne crews, with state wildlife wardens, cut into the drained cistern and guided the trapped mother and cub out, then secured the tank to prevent future incidents.

One third of college students say using violence to shut down speech on campus is acceptable: poll (nypost.com) ā Claremont readers may be interested that Claremont McKenna College, located in town, ranked first nationwide in a major free-speech survey, despite many students there still condoning some disruption or even violence against controversial speakers. The report, based on responses from tens of thousands of students, contrasts Claremont McKenna's strong overall climate for expression with troubling national trends toward self-censorship and confrontational protest tactics.
