1. L.A. County approves up to $20M for affordable housing in Claremont (urbanize.city) — Los Angeles County has approved up to $20.3 million in bond financing to help build the 74-unit Mercy Claremont affordable housing complex at 1364 N. Towne Avenue, aimed at low-income households, veterans, and wildfire-displaced families. Construction is expected to start in summer 2027 and finish by fall 2028, adding new community space, gardens, and parking for Claremont residents.
   

2. Keysight Gift Expands Hands-on Engineering Education at Harvey Mudd (hmc.edu) — Harvey Mudd College in Claremont is upgrading its engineering labs thanks to a roughly $200,000 in-kind gift of equipment and software from Keysight Technologies. The new oscilloscopes, power supplies, and design tools will modernize core lab courses and strengthen the Clinic Program, giving local students more hands-on experience with the same platforms used in industry.
   

3. Dine 909: Corky's and Septembers are fundraising this month (fresnobee.com) — Claremont diners now have a new option with Crab N Spice opening on South Indian Hill Boulevard, offering seafood boils, happy hour deals, and weekday all-you-can-eat specials. The piece also highlights monthlong Corky's and Septembers fundraisers supporting pediatric cancer care and veterans, giving local residents several ways to eat out while contributing to regional causes.
   

4. Calif. firefighters, wildlife wardens cut into cistern to rescue bear, 2 cubs (firerescue1.com) — Firefighters and wildlife wardens rescued a mother bear and two cubs from a large water tank near Claremont Wilderness Park's 5-mile loop trail after hikers heard distress sounds and called authorities. More than 40 responders cut into the cistern, drained the water, and safely freed the bears, then secured the tank to prevent future animal entrapments near this popular local hiking area.
   

5. The 10 Best Colleges In CA, According To New 2027 Ranking (patch.com) — Several Claremont colleges rank among California's best in Niche's new 2027 list, with Harvey Mudd, Pomona, and Claremont McKenna all landing in the statewide top ten. The rankings highlight strengths in academics, value, and student experience, and now include new measures for wellness and future readiness that may interest local families considering nearby options.
