Over 20 Citations Issued For Closure Violations At Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Officials Say

The park has been intermittently closed because of Red Flag Warnings and storm watches, the city said.

CLAREMONT, CA — Park rangers have issued more than 20 citations to visitors who entered Claremont Hills Wilderness Park while it was closed, and officials warned visitors on Friday to follow closure orders during dangerous weather conditions.

Over the past several weeks, Claremont Hills Wilderness Park has experienced intermittent closures because of Red Flag Warnings and storm watches issued by the National Weather Service, the city said.

Park rangers have reported an increase in violations, prompting more than 20 citations for people who entered the park despite the closures.

City officials say temporary closures are necessary to protect visitors, emergency responders and surrounding neighborhoods during critical fire-weather conditions and storms.

During Red Flag Warnings, dry conditions, strong winds and low humidity can contribute to rapidly spreading wildfires. Officials say restricting park access helps reduce the risk of human-caused fires, whether accidental or intentional, including arson, according to the city.

Closures also help prevent visitors from becoming trapped in remote areas if a wildfire breaks out, where evacuations can be difficult and dangerous, the city said.

Additionally, restricting access allows emergency personnel to focus on fire prevention and response while keeping access routes clear for emergency crews.

Officials are reminding residents and visitors to check city announcements before planning a trip to the park.

Visitors were also urged to follow posted closure signs and avoid entering the park through any access point while it is closed.
