In honor of Veterans’ Day, the Pomona Host Lions presented American flags to first graders in the classes of Ms. Arevalo and Ms. Asim at Lincoln Elementary School in Pomona.
Lion Richard Rodriguez, who is a former Pomona Unified School District board member and a former school principal, read aloud a short book, The Flag We Love. The first graders sat on the carpet in front of him, listening intently and looking at the pictures in the book.
Lions Dave Wallace and Rodriguez then gave small flags, mounted on wooden bases, to all the students. The label on the flag stand read, ““Our American flag stands for our country, its history and its people. It is a symbol of the freedoms of our United States of America.”

With encouragement from Lions President Barbara Smith, the first graders let out a loud lion’s roar for America.
As the Lions left each class, they presented the teacher with the flag book and a stuffed lion with a patriotic scarf. Lincoln Principal Alicia McMullin thanked the Pomona Host Lions, saying, “The children were very excited about it all."

The project was chaired by Lion Mary Wallace. Many other members participated in making the wood bases, sewing the scarves, acquiring the stuffed lions, books and flags, and creating labels. The Pomona Host Lions hold flag presentations throughout the year for first grade classes in the Pomona Unified School District in observance of various patriotic holidays.
