Debussy’s impressionistic Préludes for solo piano paint scenes ranging from a foggy haze to glimmering Spanish nightlife and sparkling fireworks. Frescoes in Padua, Italy, served as inspiration for composer George Crumb, whose penchant for creating entirely new colors of sound led to many special effects played inside the piano. Grammy-nominated faculty artist Genevieve Lee pairs these works with the expressive color palette of the harpsichord in Haydn’s Sonata in C Minor and a piano composition by new faculty colleague Ania Vu: Against Time.
