October is when the City begins preparing for the rainy season. It also a good time for property owners to begin prepping as well. In getting ready for the rainy season, the City clears storm drains, evaluates potential flood areas, clears City facility roofs and rain gutters, and trains staff on emergency response. It is important that the City, residents, and businesses work together to be as prepared as possible for a storm. While the City strives to protect City facilities, residents, and businesses can prepare by doing a few simple steps.

Before a Storm

• Evaluate a Flood Insurance Options.
• Obtain sandbags ahead of time.
• Clear rain gutters and drains.
• Have an emergency plan.
• Water and food on hand to supply your family for at least a 72-hour period.
• Monitor media outlets for information on weather conditions and flooding.
• Replace tires and windshield wiper blades on cars if needed.
• Replace batteries in flashlights and place in accessible locations.

During a Storm

Outside:

• Avoid areas subject to sudden flooding.
• Stay back from rushing water and do not walk-through flooded areas.
• If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, STOP! Turn around and go the other way.
• Stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires. Electric current passes easily through water.
• Monitor media outlets for information concerning weather conditions and flooding in your area.

Inside:

• If water starts to rise inside your house before you have evacuated, retreat to the second floor.
• Take dry waterproof clothing, if possible, a flashlight, and a portable radio with you. Then, wait for help.
• If you are stranded and surrounded by water, do not swim to safety; wait for rescuers to come to you.
• Look out for animals – especially snakes.

After a Storm:

• Check your home or business for water damage.
• Make immediate repairs.
• Inspect and clean rain gutters and drains.
• Inspect sandbag locations and condition. Replace as needed.

Sand Bags Available: 

Claremont fire stations have sandbags available for residents. There are sand and bags available at the following Claremont fire stations: Station #101 located at 606 Bonita Avenue, Station #102 located at 2040 N. Sumner Avenue, and Station #62 located at 3701 N. Mills Avenue.

Residents will need to bring their own shovel to fill and transport the bags themselves. For more information, please contact Community Services at (909) 399-5431.
