Damien Boys' Volleyball Fends off Fesity Dons Team, Advance to Second round in CIF Division 5 Playoffs

Chris Jorritsma's 15 kills three blocks led the Spartans past a feisty Dons team who Kept match close before the spartans pulled away

The Damien Spartans boys’ volleyball team fended off a feisty Sierra Vista team to advance to the second round of the CIF Division 5 playoffs 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 Tuesday night.

Chris Jorritsma led the way for the Spartans with 15 kills, three blocks and an ace, while John Prata added six kills for the Spartans who will host Indian Springs of San Bernardino Thursday night.

The Dons easily dispatched of Pacific Hills 25-7, 25-17, 25-15 in Saturday night’s wildcard match to earn a spot in Tuesday night’s match.

The Two teams played to a stalemate in the first set. After a hitting error by Damien’s Michael Spinney even the match at 14-14, the Spartans went on a 7-0 run to widen the gap to 21-14. Jorritsma had three kills and two blocks, as including the set-clinching kill. A Kyle Villamor kill ended the run for the Dons, who picked up three more points via Damien errors before Jorritsma’s set clincher.

The second set would be more of the same, as the Dons would hang around until the power of Damien closed out the set, this time it would be Daniel Enriquez who contributed four aces along with four Jorritsma kills to put the second set away in a 6-0 run.

Rafael Fausto was the Dons’ anchor at the net, with five blocks along with two kills.
