Some of the world’s leading olive oil connoisseurs will gather together at Fairplex in Pomona (home of the LA County Fair) for the 17th annual Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition March 15-17. This premier event has been recognized as the top ranking Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) in the nation and #5 in the world.
The event is being held on the heels of controversy surrounding the popular derivative that is produced by pressing whole olives and is commonly used in cooking. While knock-offs of designer handbags, watches and clothing are a common occurrence, a recent “60 Minutes” expose revealed that the latest counterfeit is olive oil. Made in North Africa, these phony products are deodorized with chemicals and often exported into the United States (quality olive is a relatively expensive commodity). During the competition, only the highest quality olive oil produced in the Northern Hemisphere will be judged and the winners will be announced on the website April 4.

“We have assembled some of the world’s most knowledgeable experts who will weigh in on which products bear the highest standards of integrity so that we can protect the consumer,” said Darrell Corti, chairman of the Los Angeles International EVOO Competition. “The event in March is our northern hemisphere competition, during which we evaluate oils in their prime just after harvest and bottling. The southern hemisphere competition will be held July 27 & 28 also at Fairplex.”
Among the countries whose product will be represented in March are Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the United States. The public may taste some of these products during the LA County Fair, Sept 2-25.
