Pomona Valley Branch of the NAACP Recognizes contributions of Hillcrest resident Barbara Smythe as a Woman of Distinction

On March 28, Hillcrest resident Barbara Smythe was honored as a Woman of Distinction by the Pomona Valley Branch of the NAACP, which recognizes extraordinary women who have made meaningful contributions in leadership, faith, education, business, community service and family life.
Recognized for her enduring impact on the community through arts, culture and mentorship, Barbara was instrumental in founding the Cultural Arts Society of La Verne.
In 2014, Barbara played a key role in launching The Gallery at Hillcrest, creating a vibrant, high-quality space where artists can share their work in a setting that fosters both multicultural appreciation and intergenerational connection.

In 2016, she worked with Ganesha High School AP art students to display their portraits of African American individuals who have influenced their lives at the Gallery. In 2026, students' artwork was also displayed at the “Acknowledgment of Influence” exhibit.
