La Verne Law Review Symposium

Brown v. Board of Education at 60: Cause Lawyering for a New Generation

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the landmark civil rights decision, Brown v. Board of Education. La Verne Law Review at the University of La Verne College of Law is marking the occasion with a symposium, Brown v. Board of Education at 60: Cause Lawyering for a New Generation, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28 at the La Verne Law campus in Ontario.

This year’s symposium will explore many of the issues that cause lawyering – defined by some as the usage of law for the promotion of social change – has and continues to raise. Through a series of panels featuring legal professionals, educators and organizational leaders, the symposium will examine the issues of cause lawyering in four specific settings: voting rights, immigration, abortion and LGBT equality.

F. Michael Higginbotham, renowned law professor, author and international political consultant, will deliver the symposium’s keynote address. The Wilson H. Elkins Professor of Law at University of Baltimore School of Law, Higginbotham is author of Ghosts of Jim Crow: Ending Racism in Post-Racial America and Race Law: Cases, Commentary, and Questions. A civil rights, human rights and constitutional legal expert, he has appeared in media worldwide and was recently selected one of the 100 most influential black attorneys in the United States.

The La Verne Law Symposium is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m., with registration opening at 8 a.m. The day-long event is free and open to the public (RSVP required). There is an $85 charge for those seeking the available 6.0 MCLE credits. Lunch is included and parking is free. Those interested can RSVP or register online at http://law.laverne.edu/2014symposium/. Additional information is available by calling (909) 460-2080.
