City of La Verne resident Keith Garwick announced his candidacy today for the position of City Council Member in the upcoming election of 7 March 2017. This year, the City of La Verne will be conducting the election as part of the Los Angeles County Consolidated, Municipal and Special Election. Garwick believes that his experience and background as a candidate brings a unique opportunity for the voters to broaden City Council's diversification of viewpoints, analysis, and abilities.
Keith Garwick and his wife, Shari, are both graduates of the States Military Academy at West Point New York - class of 1988. Keith served as a commissioned officer in the Army's 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment along the West German / East German / Czechoslovakia cold-war border. Keith commanded reconnaissance patrols, where his soldiers monitored Soviet troop movement across the heavily militarized zone. Keith led his platoon of Cavalry Scouts into battle in the 1991 Iraq campaign (Desert Storm) and received a Silver Star commendation for his actions against the Iraqi Republican Guards Army at The Battle of 73 Easting. Keith finished his military service obligation in the California desert's National Training Center with the Army's elite designated "bad guys" instructors known as the "OPFOR."
Between 2002 and 2015, Garwick served full-time as a Police Corporal with the La Verne Police Department. His assignments included 8 years of Patrol and 5 years as School Resource Officer for Bonita Unified School District. "I have personally seen what our community faces every day – our difficulties and our triumphs. Whether patrolling the city or as Bonita’s School Resource Officer, I have always tried to help others in any way possible," says Garwick.
Keith now teaches Forensic Science at both Bonita and Lutheran high schools. Garwick is also the United States Military Academy Admissions Representative for Congresswoman Grace Napolitano’s 32nd Congressional District. "I absolutely love teaching!" he said. We have amazing students, it is a joy to be their instructor. Ironically, they teach me more about themselves than I ever thought possible – their goals, fears, and hopes. To be quite candid, teaching has taught me a great deal about myself."
Keith and his wife (Shari Garwick) purchased a house on the quiet cul-de-sac of Duval Street in 2009. There, the Garwick's raised their three children. "La Verne is the perfect place to raise a family. Shari and I have had the good fortune of watching our three children flourish in La Verne. Our kids are all now adults and off to the four winds of college and career, but they always rush to get home for the holidays – and that says a LOT about our town!"
"I think it is pretty safe to say that folks don't move here with the belief that La Verne is a get-rich-quick scheme," per Garwick. "People come here because it's the kind of place that fills the heart and soul." Keith believes that community leaders have the absolute obligation of stewardship. "Family, Growth, Community - every decision that we make must be with these priorities in mind. For example - if you must cut down a tree, make darned sure that you plant at least TWO in its place. Leave the place BETTER than you found it - that's stewardship!"
Garwick plans on walking each one of the 26 U.S. Postal Service routes in the city between now and election day to speak with as many residents as possible. Keith also invites any resident who would like to discuss a specific topic should contact his email ELECT.GARWICK@GMAIL.COM - either leaving callback information or anonymously, as they prefer.
"It's an honor just to be on the ballot," said Garwick, "Please elect me to serve as your representative on City Council."
