Man Shot in Pomona Drive-By, Dies at Hospital

The slaying came on the same day the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a sharp spike in homicides in Pomona over the past two years.

A 23-year-old man was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in Pomona, police said Tuesday.

Andrew McColeman of Pomona was "hanging out" with some friends in a front yard in the 1400 block of South White Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Monday when a small dark vehicle rolled up and someone inside fired several rounds, said Pomona police Sgt. Patrick O'Malley.

Family members took McColeman to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, O'Malley said.

The slaying came on the same day the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a sharp spike in homicides in Pomona over the past two years.

Prior to McColeman's slaying, there had been 19 homicides in the city so far in 2013, all of them shootings, compared to 17 for all of 2012 and 11 in 2011, The Times reported.

"We're seeing a mix of every thing. Personal, drug-related, some are straight gang-related," Pomona police Lt. Eddie Vasquez told the newspaper.
