Michael Ruane named Executive VP at National CORE

Long-time OC public agency executive named to senior leadership position at Rancho Cucamonga-based developer of affordable housing.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – Michael M. Ruane, long-time Orange County public agency executive and immediate past Chair of the Orange County/Inland Empire District Council of the Urban Land Institute, has been named Executive Vice President of National Community Renaissance, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit developers of affordable housing.

Ruane has served in a variety of leadership positions in Orange County, including Interim Chief Operating Officer of CalOptima, Executive Director of the Children and Family Commission, Assistant County Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Environmental Management Agency. He joined CalOptima in 2012 and has served as Chief of Strategy and Public Affairs and Executive Director of the CalOptima Foundation.

Ruane is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine, and earned a master’s degree from the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He is a Lecturer in the Planning, Policy and Design Program at UC Irvine where he led a graduate practicum in affordable housing development for the past two years.

At National CORE, he will serve as second in command to President and Chief Executive Officer Steve PonTell.

National CORE manages nearly 9,000 affordable, senior and market-rate units in California, Arkansas, Texas and Florida. It is one of the few companies of its kind that develops, builds and manages its units, while also providing life-changing social services through its Hope through Housing Foundation.

National CORE has also been a leading advocacy voice with regard to the housing shortage and the resulting affordability crisis. California alone is 1 million housing units short of meeting demand.
