Multiple Shootings Occur in Pomona Overnight

It was a bloody night in Pomona, with four shootings in six hours and at least three confirmed deaths, police and firefighters said.

Gunfire first was reported at 9:25 p.m. Saturday on Lexington Avenue, west of Garey Avenue, according to Pomona police Sgt. Steve Congalton.

Jose Cerda, 45, of Pomona was riding his bicycle in front of the Cardenas Market near the intersection of Lexington and Garey avenues when a vehicle pulled along side of him and someone inside shot him several times. Cerda was pronounced dead at the scene by county fire paramedics, Congalton said.

The suspect vehicle's driver made a U-turn and headed back west on Lexington, and then turned south on Park Avenue, as its driver fled, Congalton added

About two hours later, at 11:30 p.m., two people were shot in the north alley at 349 Orchard Lane, according to Congalton.

Isais Lopez, 24, of Ontario, and an unnamed 18-year-old Pomona man were walking in the alley when they were shot by unknown suspects, Congalton said. Lopez was hit several times in the upper body and died at the scene.

The teenager was shot several times, but he was able to run to a nearby courtyard where he was found by Pomona police officers, according to Congalton. County fire paramedics were called in and treated that victim at the scene.

He was then airlifted to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery, Congalton said. His current condition was not known.

About 2 a.m. Sunday there was yet another shooting, in the 2200 block of Canterbury Ave., according Pomona police Sgt. I. Miller. Officers responded to the location after a shots fired call.

Officers there found numerous shell casings on the street and two cars that were hit by gunfire, according to Miller.

A 29-year-old man from Pomona was later located nearby with a gunshot wound to the leg. That victim then went to the hospital on his own and was treated there, Miller added. His current condition was not known.

The fourth shooting followed at about 2:50 a.m. at 1706 Benedict Way, near San Bernardino Avenue, according to Congalton.

That victim, Angel Bravo, 29, of Pomona, left his residence to go to the store, Congalton said. Bravo was standing near his vehicle on the street when another car pulled up and someone inside that car  began shooting at him.

Bravo suffered several gunshot wounds to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by L.A. County paramedics, according to Congalton.

A suspect vehicle, a small, white compact, sped off, according to police.
