Nearly 500 People Arrested in July 4th Countywide DUI Crackdown

Between 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and midnight on Saturday, 490 people were arrested, according to provisional figures.

Hundreds of people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs this holiday weekend, according to officials of the Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign.

Between 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and midnight on Saturday, 490 people were arrested, according to provisional figures.

Last year during the same period, 343 people were arrested, officials said.

Final numbers were expected to increase as results from increased patrols planned for Sunday were not yet available as of this posting.  Those Sunday operations were expected to be held in in El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Signal Hill, South Gate, Torrance and various Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Avoid programs are named for the numbers of law enforcement agencies in each county.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The California Highway Patrol has officers patrolling freeways and county roads during its maximum enforcement period.
