The Proud UC-40A Electra Junior Flies Again August 16

The most famous Electra was purchased by Purdue University, for Amelia Earhart.

From a press release:

On August 16 at Yanks Air Museum in Chino, CA, this 1930’s-era glistening, low wing, monoplane will again soar in flight over Chino, CA on the Museum’s Heritage Flight. This was the first twin engine aircraft built by Lockheed and the first all metal airplane ever produced. The C-40 (model 12-A) was the fastest transport airplane in the field. It out-climbed and out-flew any other twin. It handled nicely, had power to spare and pilots liked to fly it. Take a look inside the cockpit for a pilot eye’s view.

Night crossings and poor terrain flights were restricted to twin aircraft in 1934. This created a need for the new Electra. Big and small businesses liked the advantage of landing in small town airports. Many never-before offered options were available on the Electra - including: autopilot, partitions, plush seats, couch, lavatory, desk and typewriter.

This aircraft’s service history took it from its original delivery field at Kelly, Texas in 1939 through seven states, finally being stricken and disposed of in Augusta Georgia in 1945. It was added to the Yanks collection in 1998 and reconstruction was completed in 2006.

The Yanks Air Museum collection of more than the 200 + historic, working aircraft is considered one of the most prominent in the world. A model plane collection and an “insider’s” peak at the restoration workshops of the museum are also offered. Call for information about special re-enactor and flight days.
