The City of Claremont was saddened to learn of the closure of The Claremont Club last Friday. The Club has been an asset to the community for over 47 years. The City Manager and City staff will be meeting this week with the owners of the Club to discuss their plans for the future.

At this time, the City has not received any proposals for the property. Community members have inquired if the City could purchase the property, however the City its own financial challenges and does not have the funds to purchase or run the facility.

The property is zoned CR Commercial Recreation District. The CR Commercial Recreation District is intended to provide for large commercial health, fitness, and recreation complexes to serve a large regional market area. A change in zoning would require an amendment to the City’s General Plan and public review process by the Planning Commission and City Council. Additionally, any project proposal that substantially changes the existing facility or zoning would require an environmental review process. In some circumstances, California law restricts the number of public meetings for project review, however developers may hold unlimited meetings prior to submitting a project application to the City. The City encourages developers to reach out to neighbors and other stakeholders before submitting a project application with the City in order to gauge the community’s response to a potential project.

The City is committed to keeping the community informed as we find out more from the property owners on their plans for the future of The Claremont Club.
