Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. It may not be the ending that the Gabe family had hoped for, but the investigation into her disappearance has come to an end. On May 26, Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton filed a murder charge against Marshall Curtis Jones III for the killing of 24-year-old Oakley resident, Alexis Gabe. The DA, along with Antioch Police and Oakley Police coordinated with Washington State authorities to arrest Jones who had moved to Washington State since the Gabe's disappearance. During the attempt to apprehend Jones, he allegedly charged at officers from a fugitive taskforce. He came at them wielding a knife. They shot him and immediately began lifesaving actions. Jones died at the scene. (Claycord.com)
  2. Fire Station 55 in Oakley is officially open! Funded through Measure X, the engine company is equipped to dispatch on either the station's standard Type 1 Engine 55 or its wildland firefighting Engine 355. "This is the first of many improvements we'll see to fire service capacity this summer and into next year. It's the busiest month for fire and emergency response. And that's why I'm overjoyed to ring in this June by celebrating together with you the opening of Station 55," Supervisor Burgis said. (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for tacos! Students in a Reading Intervention Group at Concord High School were rewarded for their reading efforts by being treated to a taco for every 100 pages they read on their own. The goal was to earn enough tacos to complete the famed Concord Taco Trail. "This program started around February, and it took a late push for them to just squeak by and complete the trail this week," said school psychologist Eric Diamond. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. A couple were robbed of their wallet and Rolex to armed robbers that approached them in downtown Walnut Creek on Thursday night. The suspects approached the victims brandishing guns, so the victims surrendered their property. Neither of the victims was physically injured during the encounter. (News 24/680)
  5. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was awarded a $3 million California Climate Investments Wildfire Prevention grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It will use the money for a shaded fuel break across southern Lafayette and Walnut Creek as protection from wildfires for residents in the communities of Rossmoor and southern Lafayette.
